Oliver obtained a diploma in physics from the University of Frankfurt, specialising in high energy physics detectors and their calibration. He subsequently moved to the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton where he received a PhD in optoelectronics working on fibre optic strain and temperature sensors for civil engineering structures and fibre lasers for telecommunication and sensor applications.
For about nine years he continued using his optics skills in the area of liquid crystals, developing telecommunication waveguide devices based on liquid crystals and working on experimental and theoretical aspects of liquid crystal lasers in Southampton and Cambridge.
After a short interval working with superconductors he joined CamBridgeSens as Programme Manager in February 2012. He now organises sensor related workshops across the University, liaises with industrial partners and explores opportunities for sensor related research within the university and with commercial and government partners.
Oliver is also Director of Studies in Engineering at Murray Edwards College.
